After daughter’s suicide, mother sues University of Pennsylvania, Amazon

The suit says the school ignored Arya Singh’s claims of a sexual assault – leading to a two-year downward spiral culminating in her cyanide suicide.

The mother of a University Pennsylvania student that killed herself with cyanide she bought off of Amazon is suing both the school and the retailer, according to multiple reports.

“Despite Arya’s problems, university employees’ conduct toward her was unsympathetic, hostile, and at times vindictive”, the suit states, according to reports. In 2011, Singh reported being sexually assaulted in her dorm room as a freshman by another student.

The lawsuit also said that the school never contacted Singh’s sister or mother about the troubled behavior the student was exhibiting.

On December 7, 2012, Singh purchased soluble cyanide crystals from a vendor on Amazon.com, named in the suit as a citizen from Thailand and his company.

The report included the allegation a university official wrote they had “no sympathy” for Singh in an email, adding “she deserves anything you dish out to her”.

Sujata Singh is suing Amazon for negligence and failing to prevent a Thai company from selling cyanide to her daughter.

By the spring 2013 semester, Singh was being investigated for academic misconduct. She was asked to leave university housing on February 8 of that year, and she was found unconscious in her dorm room that day and was not able to be revived. She was 20. It alleges that there have been 51 purchases of these types of salts online that have resulted in 11 deaths, even though Amazon had some policies in place to prevent such sales.

Attorneys for Amazon and the university say they won’t comment on pending litigation. Calls to a number listed for Singh’s family were not returned.
