After Irom Sharmila ends fast, Robita Leima starts fast unto death

Robita alleged one of the civil society groups tried to forcefully confine her in their office so that she can not start her fasting.

For the second time Irom Chanu Sharmila who recently ended her 16-year-old fast declined an offer from the Manipur unit of Aam Aadami Party (AAP) to join the party and contest as its candidate in the upcoming State Assembly polls.

She said she was not only demanding repeal of the “draconian” Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), but also the implementation of Inner Line Permit (ILP) system in the state.

Ms Robita said she has deep regards for Irom Sharmila and now wanted to continue her fight against AFSPA.

Citizens’ organisations, mostly women’s groups, whom Robita consulted before taking her decision disapproved and said that they do not support the move as she has a family with two small children.

Robita is also a writer who has bagged global and national awards.

Though Afspa was enforced in the hill areas much earlier to contain the insurgency by the Naga rebels, it was on November 8, 1980 that it was imposed in the valley areas.

Despite Sharmila’s campaign it has continued in Manipur.
