After primary rout, Sanders campaign lays off hundreds of staffers

The other February contests got a lot of attention, as did Super Tuesday and the mega-states like NY.

But when did anyone know to get excited about Indiana?

Cruz tapped the former Hewlett-Packard chief executive Fiorina as his would be his vice presidential pick, without waiting – as is customary – for the end of the primary campaign.

But it has come down to this.

Republican Donald Trump trained his fire on Hillary Clinton Wednesday, accusing his Democratic rival of playing “the woman card” in her White House bid, after both took a giant step towards clinching their parties’ nominations. In the 25 states polled, Trump won 36 per cent women and 44 per cent of men. Bernie Sanders won Rhode Island, according to the Associated Press.

Among Republicans who now lean toward the GOP, Trump bags 49 percent support, an uptick of six full points over just the last week.

Clinton and Trump had similar wins in Pennsylvania.

But that effort did little to stop Mr Trump from a big showing, picking up at least 105 of the 118 delegates up for grabs. According to the AP count, Clinton now has 2,151 delegates while Sanders has 1,338.

“You remember in mid-March after a string of losses, the media wrote his political obituary and we came back to win eight in a row”, she said, adding, “So we’re expecting to do the same here”. He cast the unusual announcement as a way to give voters confidence in their choice if they vote for him. While the final number is not yet clear, between delegates saying they will vote for him or vote for victor of Congressional District, he should get well more than half of the 54 unbound delegates on the first ballot at the convention.

Candidates typically wait until they’ve secured their party’s nomination before picking a running mate, in part to avoid appearing to be getting ahead of the will of the voters. So he keeps running.

On the Republican side, though, the drive for unity has yet to begin. But Cruz remains far from securing the party nomination.

The continuing attacks have not gone unnoticed by Trump.

The Republican race now turns to IN, where next week’s primary marks one of Cruz’s last chances to slow Trump and push the race toward a contested convention. He dismissed President Barack Obama’s foreign policy as steeped in weakness and chaos. Cruz was a distant second with 568, and Kasich at 154.

Hillary Clinton told a crowd of supporters this week that if fighting for abortion rights, equal pay, and other women’s issues is “playing the woman card”, then “deal me in!” A campaign more confident of its prospects of winning the nomination would generally be more inclined to leave people in place to focus on general-election preparations. He said that he had yet to “recover” from having heard her yells. On Tuesday Trump had declared himself as presumptive nominee.

U.S. Representative Renee Ellmers, a Republican, said she believed Trump could overcome his unpopularity with women voters with his straight talk: “To me, this is breaking all the rules, this is going against any of the typical history books and elections of the past”.
