After slow start, offense clicks and carries Steelers past Redskins in opener

The play wasn’t just a missed chance at envious field position.

Jenkins is known for his run defense and the Redskins showed they needed more of that in their Week 1 loss to Pittsburgh. He tossed two and on one of them, he did not see linebacker Ryan Shazier drop into coverage.

The Redskins definitely have the firepower offensively, and early in the game they did a good job of using a variety of personnel packages and featuring different targets.

“You know, we lost”. Some may even say that it was and that the Steelers got a break. The result was a blowout-and more evidence that this team is still a pretender, not a contender. “It was a good, old-fashioned butt whooping”. “. I think that’s the one thing we [have] got to really look at”. “We prepared for it during the week and the guys created enough comfort in us through preparation that we had very little hesitation not only making that call, but making a similar call a few moments later”.

One the Redskins side, Kirk Cousins threw a touchdown pass in every game last season, but couldn’t manage one on Monday.

Here’s something that won’t shock any football fans: Josh Norman got into a scuffle during Monday night’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Breeland had the most humbling night of his promising young career while covering arguably the NFL’s best receiver.

Norman rarely lined up against Brown, but no Redskins defender could slow down the Steelers receiver, who finished with 126 yards on eight receptions. However, just as a Redskins’ defender scooped up the loose ball, center Maurkice Pouncey knocked it free, and Pittsburgh recovered.

You may have also noticed Brown twerking after that touchdown… and that drew a 15-yard flag.

Pittsburgh lived a charmed life, as another apparent fumble by Brown was ruled an incompletion. Often Eli Rogers and Sammie Coates played two of the receiver positions and Jesse James was the tight end in such situations.

“It was a freaky night”, Breeland said.

The Pittsburgh Steelers were supposed to be a test for a Washington team that played a soft schedule past year and won a weak division.

Give a lot of credit to the Steelers offensive line who allowed just one sack and opened up big holes for running back DeAngelo Williams.

We shouldn’t be questioning why Washington refused to put Norman on Brown; we should be asking why it spent so much money on a corner who can easily be schemed around.

How good is Washington? “Everything he wants us to do, I’m 110 percent in”.

Meanwhile, his Super Bowl-winning counterpart posted a virtuoso performance for Pittsburgh.

The Redskins now have a short week to get ready for next Sunday’s home game against the Cowboys. Words cannot describe how terrible this game was for Cousins and company. Green Bay, Arizona and Carolina still to play.

“They took us behind the woodshed today and wore our tail out”, Norman said. “We have to get better in a hurry, starting Tuesday”. Instead, it’s still a major question mark.
