After turmoil, Sanders, Mrs. Obama thrill convention
Sanders has endorsed Clinton, but his delegates are pushing for a state-by-state tally. As chairman of the Democratic National Committee, McAuliffe helped provide a hefty $5 million to Kaine’s campaign for governor.

New Jersey also might have been on Trump’s mind because its current governor, Republican Chris Christie, was among Trump’s finalists for the vice presidential nod that ultimately went to Indiana Gov. Mike Pence. Kaine seems to be more of a blank slate, or background noise, than an immediate assets to Clinton’s campaign. She then called President Barack Obama to inform him of the decision.
After winning several key concessions, Sanders finally offered Clinton his formal backing last month.
Trump made clear his authoritarianism in his acceptance speech in Cleveland, declaring he will be “our voice” and that he will singlehandedly renegotiate trade treaties and defense pacts and make America smell great again through endless “winning”.
President Bill Clinton, watching from the audience, leapt to his feet and applauded, as did most of the delegates filling the convention arena.
Clinton was due to campaign in Charlotte, North Carolina on Monday.
And yes, I know I’m ignoring the House here, along with what will likely be a continuation of Republican obstructionism in the Senate, where the Democrats might grab the majority but won’t have a 60-vote supermajority to overcome filibusters.
But Kaine’s long-time friend and fellow senator Mark Warner said Tuesday that his fellow Virginian’s tone and tenor make him the flawless antidote to GOP nominee Donald Trump – something that Warner believes will be on display in his speech. Despite her vast experience, the former Secretary of State knows she has a problem with voters and is working hard to get them to like her.
Clinton’s campaign closely guarded the selection process, keeping the names of finalists under wraps to try to maximize the impact of the announcement.
On Thursday, the final night, Chelsea Clinton will introduce her mother for her speech accepting the Democratic nomination.
The frustration some Sanders’ supporters still have with Clinton – a candidate they see as entrenched in a political system they distrust -was evident, with the crowd breaking into a chorus of boos.
Kaine’s Saturday appearance will be another test of his ability to serve up the traditional attack lines that vice presidential candidates are expected to deliver. Ted Cruz, refused to endorse the billionaire businessman.
“I don’t do anything unless I win”, Trump insisted. Mrs. Obama’s address all but wiped away earlier tumult in the convention hall that had exposed lingering tensions between Clinton and Sanders supporters. “Trump’s entire campaign is just one more late-night Trump infomercial”.
Before entering politics, Kaine was an attorney who specialized in civil rights and fair housing. He speaks fluent Spanish and took a year off from Harvard law school to work as a missionary in Honduras.
According to Clinton, there are a few people in the Republican Party, her political adversaries, who do not bear a grudge. The couple has three children, Nat, 26, Woody, 24, and Annella, 21. A new CNN/ORC poll even shows Trump leading over Clinton after a strong performance last week. Sanders was taking the stage in a highly anticipated address, as was Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, two Latino cabinet secretaries and New Jersey Sen.
And I watch my daughters, two lovely, intelligent, black young women playing with their dogs on the White House lawn. Among Democrats, 63% call Kaine a good choice, including 66% of liberal Democrats and 58% of moderate or conservative Democrats.
Kaine is the junior United States senator from Virginia and was the state’s governor from 2006 to 2010.

“Do you want a “you’re fired” president or a “you’re hired” president?” Kaine appointed Omeish to the Virginia Immigration Commission even though Omeish is Vice President of a risky mosque that was led by terrorist Anwar Al-Awlaki as its Imam and had other terrorists in the congregation including two 9/11 hijackers and Nidal Hasan, who killed 13 soldiers and wounded 32 in the Fort Hood massacre. “Do you want a trash-talking president or a bridge-building president?”
