After Uri, terrorists attack police post in J&K’s Handwara

July 19 2008: Ten Indian Army soldiers were killed and 20 injured when militants used an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) to attack an Army convoy at Narbal on the Srinagar-Baramulla highway.

The soldier succumbed to his injuries at a hospital later.

On September 18, militants attacked an Indian army brigade headquarters near Line of Control, killing at least 17 soldiers in the most deadly such attack in the northern region of Kashmir since 2014.

The Home Minister, Defence Minister and the top officials also reviewed the security situation across the country, particulary along the western border – from Punjab to Gujarat, the sources said.

“PM Modi later briefed President Pranab Mukherjee on the discussions held at the high-level meeting on Monday”.

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Gen Raheel Sharif during a corps commander’s conference on Monday said the Pakistan Army is “fully prepared to respond to the entire spectrum of direct and indirect threats”, according to an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement. He did not condemn the Uri attack, which India has blamed on Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM).

“Kashmiris’ legitimate and just struggle for self-determination can not be suppressed by state repression”, Khan told Prime Minister of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) Raja Mohammad Farooq Haider Khan who called on him here.

“Enough is enough… How long will we keep on absorbing terror strikes without effectively retaliating?” The operation was carried out on Tuesday afternoon at Lachipura area in the Uri sector by the Indian army.

“India has erected a type-A fence all along the Line of Control besides installing state-of-the-art laser sensors to detect any cross LoC movement”, the newspaper wrote. Some officials suggested sending in special forces trained in “irregular warfare” to target terrorist camps and outposts on the opposite side of the LoC.

After giving an assurance of going after the perpetrators of the deadly Uri attack, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday gave the green signal to diplomatically isolate Pakistan at every worldwide grouping.India is to present all actionable evidence against Pakistan to global bodies if required.

“The government has to take into account that any strike inside Pakistan can escalate into an all-out war”.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has vowed to punish those responsible for Sunday’s attack.

But security experts say India lacks the military capabilities to take on its neighbour in the divided region, already tense after weeks of violent clashes between police and demonstrators protesting at Indian rule.
