After US Open win, Novak Djokovic credits Roger Federer rivalry for success

Winning three slams in one year is hard to do, but Djokovic has done it twice, and unless his body starts breaking down, there’s no one good enough to stop him right now.

Federer, now 34, won his 10th major (2007 Australian Open) when he was 25-three years younger than Djokovic.

Despite having New York crowd against him, Djokovic holds nerve to down Federer.

Djokovic raced into an early set lead against Federer, who after impressing on his serves for most part of the tournament, was beginning to dish them flat inside Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday night. In matches like this, you simply can not win by converting four out of 23 break-points and this would be a statistic that will disappoint the great champion.

He is seven behind Federer but is six years younger. On Pete Sampras (6) and Roger Federer (5) have finished more times No. 1 since the ranking began in 1973. “Hopefully I can have more chances to fight for a trophy”. However, Federer could not manage to win the next two sets as the Serb sealed yet another victory over the 17-time Grand Slam victor . He won three of four major titles and was runner-up in the other, a feat he’s never accomplished before.

“Maybe I haven’t played this offensive for a very long time, and that’s maybe the reasons, as well, why maybe I was slightly shaky when it came to the crunch on the break points”.

The second-seeded Federer is still stuck on 17 Grand Slam championships, with none since 2012 Wimbledon.

The 17-times grand slam victor from Switzerland gave a celebration roar after the sizzling victor , elated to avoid a tiebreaker after losing the opening set 6-4 to the world number one.

Reflecting on a season in which only defeat by Stan Wawrinka in the final at Roland Garros denied him a clean sweep of grand slams, Djokovic said: “It’s been an incredible season, next to 2011 the best of my life. I’m playing good tennis“, said Federer.

He added: “I love this sport and all these achievements are incentive for me to keep on going”.

“I’ll see you guys next year”, Federer told an adoring crowd following his 6-4 5-7 6-4 6-4 loss. A display of talent that prompted Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic to say, “Djokovic is like a shark”.

In the third set, Federer continued to stay sharp and had many break point chances to steal the third set. Once more, this is nothing against Serena Williams, who also had great pressure on her at the U.S. Open because of her Slam run, but her major year, while one of the best in women’s tennis history, can’t even touch that of Djokovic.
