At around 3 am on Tuesday, Mr Ayyub’s vehicle crashed into another on a highway resulting in the death of the calf, they said. Shaikh is still in police custody. Their lawyer said that the family had made a decision to wait for a day for the police to keep its word. They were asked to stop, but when they did not, the SUV rammed their auto near Honest Circle on SG Highway. Police, however, said Shaikh is highly “unreliable as he has cooked up a story”.

The police later registered two FIRs, the first against Sheikh and Ayyub under the Cow Protection Act, and the other against the cow vigilantes as an attempt to murder case. So far, the angle of cow vigilantes has not cropped up. When some bystanders checked the auto, they found a calf and a bullock. Shaikh told us that he had taken a lift from Ayyub from somewhere near Adalaj, but his call detail records showed that both were in touch over phone. Cops, however, say there is no evidence supporting Shaikh’s claims. However, after checking CCTV footage obtained from nine major traffic junctions, nothing suspicious was found.

However, advocate Shamshad Pathan, speaking on behalf of Shaikh, claimed otherwise. “To save himself from people’s wrath, Ayyub started running”, inspector PB Rana of the Anandnagar police station said.

Imran said: “Those who killed my brother were indeed gau rakshaks”.

VHP city president Rajubhai Patel said that gau rakshaks were being wrongly blamed in the case.

Ayyub’s family alleged these three men were among those who beat up Ayyub causing his death. Later, three gau rakshaks filed a complaint against Mohammad Ayyub and Sameer Sheikh Sheikh for illegally transporting the animals. My brother was not carrying any cow or calf. Ayub and Sameer were transporting cattle in their sedan when gau rakshaks allegedly rammed the sedan with their SUV on SG Highway and thrashed the drivers.
