Aid convoys for Syria’s Aleppo delayed amid rising violence

A senior Syrian rebel was cited by Reuters as saying the truce “will not hold out” amid the fresh fighting.

Syria’s conflict has killed more than 300,000 people and displaced half the country’s population since March 2011.

Golani’s fighters are deeply embedded in opposition areas and often fight alongside more moderate factions.

The defense ministry in Russian Federation, which has been aiding Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad in the five-year-old civil war, said US jets had killed more than 60 Syrian soldiers in four air strikes and that a fierce battle was now taking place near the airport.

The Syrian military also said the airstrike enabled ISIS militants, whom the U.S. coalition was established to target, to advance on a strategic hill.

It says “coalition forces would not intentionally strike a known Syrian military unit”.

Syria’s war between Assad and rebels seeking to topple him has drawn in regional and global powers and allowed militant jihadist groups including Islamic State to gain territory and inspire attacks.

The Russian Defence Ministry said earlier that coalition warplanes had killed 62 Syrian servicemen and injured 100 others, TASS reported. He did not identify which country in the coalition they belonged to.

The strike took place in an area that was previously struck, and coalition members had earlier informed Russian officials “of the upcoming strike”, the command said. He says the planes came from the direction of the border with Iraq. Russian Federation has been waging a year-old air campaign on behalf of Syrian president Bashar Assad’s forces and closely coordinates with them.

There was no immediate comment from Washington.

Damage caused by the strike has allowed the extremists to advance their position on to a hill overlooking the base, according to the Syrian military.

The Syrian military called the bombing a “serious and blatant aggression” against Syrian forces, and said it was “conclusive evidence” that the United States and its allies support IS militants. Daesh is an Arabic acronym for IS.

The US has no contact with Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government and limited military-to-military communications with Moscow.

Despite a cease-fire, aid convoys have been unable to reach the rebel-held parts of the city.

Earlier on Saturday, a United Nations humanitarian group expressed frustration that it has so far been unable to deliver aid to Aleppo amid fears that the US-Russian truce is about to collapse.

According to the deal, which was not fully disclosed, the rebels were also set to withdraw back in order to make the Castello a humanitarian road under the supervision of Russian forces.

The US warned Russian Federation yesterday (Friday) that it would not move ahead with a plan to target jihadist groups in Syria unless Moscow forced the regime to allow humanitarian aid into the besieged city of Aleppo.
