USA music promoters have been jostling to hold the first major United States pop concert in Havana early next year and baseball stars, including Cuban-born defectors Yasiel Puig and Jose Abreu, were welcomed in Cuba last week during a trip to pave the way for training games there next year. That is a key issue for the United States in advancing relations but Havana says it is a matter of national sovereignty.
Cuba and the United States reached an agreement on Wednesday night that will allow USA commercial airlines to begin operating flights to the island for the first time in decades, according to U.S. officials with knowledge of the discussion.
For economic development leaders, the latest thawing of relations has the potential for gains for Louisiana in tourism as well as trade with a country that it shares significant historical and cultural connections.
That includes 20 flights to Havana and 10 to each of the other nine global airports in Cuba, he said, adding that no date has been set for final signing of the aviation pact but that nothing was expected to derail it.
“Since then, we have taken important steps forward to normalize relations between our countries – re-establishing diplomatic relations and opening embassies; facilitating greater travel and commerce; connecting more Americans and Cubans; and promoting the free flow of information to, from, and within Cuba”, he said.
On December 14, 15 and 16 the third round of technical talks on civil aviation between delegations from Cuba and the United States, including the establishment of scheduled flights between both countries, was held in Washington. Commenting on the upcoming changes, Scott Laurence, the Senior Vice President for Airline Planning at JetBlue Airways Corp, said, “Interest in Cuba has reached levels not seen for a generation”.
“Congress can support a better life for the Cuban people by lifting an embargo that is a legacy of a failed policy”, Mr. Obama said.
JetBlue will submit its application for new routes to the U.S. Department of Transportation once the airline has fully reviewed terms of the agreement and has clarity on the process and timing of assigning frequencies to U.S. airlines.
Sports and cultural activity is heating up too.
Kass did not speculate on when commercial flights might be opened to US tourists.
