“Ground operations in Shawal, Waziristan, begin”, the Inter-Services Pulic Relations (ISPR) spokesman Major General Asim Bajwa announced via Twitter on Thursday night.

More than 160 fighters have been killed in five consecutive days of strikes by the army, which followed the killing of a provincial official in the northeastern Punjab province in a suicide attack on Sunday.

“The area is a stronghold of Khan Sajna Said, the leader of a Taliban faction whose name the United States put on a sanctions list of ‘specially designated global terrorists” past year.

North Waziristan used to be the Pakistani Taliban’s last key stronghold until the start of the operation.

The army has been waging an offensive against militant hideouts in the area since June previous year.

Officials say almost 3,000 militants have been killed since the launch of the latest offensive.
