The Election Commission had earlier, deferred the by-polls in Anantnag Assembly seat in Jammu and Kashmir and Kanubari seat in Arunachal Pradesh. She contested on a TMC ticket this time and won the Karimpur seat in Nadia district by 15,989 votes.
“In Kerala, the Congress and the Left keep winning by turns”.
Scripting history, the BJP today stormed to power in Assam bagging a Government in the North East for the first time dethroning Congress which also lost Kerala while Jayalalithaa and Mamata Banerjee retained power in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal with spectacular victories.
In Kerala, the Congress led United Democratic Front was routed, managing to salvage 46 seats of the 73 previously held.
The Congress, which had secured 78 seats in the last elections, was today victorious in 10 seats and was leading in 14 (total 24).The AIUDF, led by Badrudin Ajmal, won 3 seats and was ahead in 10 (total 13).
From Bilari (Morada-bad/Shamli) Assembly seat, SP candidate Mohammad Fahim, who got 9,044 votes, won with a margin of 7,063 votes against his nearest rival BJP’s Suresh Saini, officials said.
Assam went to the polls in two phases on April 4 and 11, while West Bengal saw polling in six phases between April 4 and May 5. “This means that the BJP could not defeat regional parties in their bastions”, Sena said.
For Assam and Kerala, all exit polls had suggested strong drubbing for the Congress, and predicted power to the BJP in the northeastern, border state and comeback to the Left in the god’s own country in the southeastern strip.

President Pranab Mukherjee, former prime minister Manmohan Singh and a number of Congress party leaders also paid tributes to the former youngest prime minister of India. The BJP has got three seats as against the Congress 44. This election actually wiped out all other political parties–like the one man shows that Tamil Nadu is famous for–with the AIADMK (40.8) and DMK (31.6) together capturing over 72% of the vote. Equally significant is the fact that the country’s fastest growing states (most of which are the least developed BIMARU states), as well as major states that are hubs of industrial activity (including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu) are out of the Congress’ grasp. “On the other hand, BJP’s vote share declined to 29.4 per cent from 36.5 per cent”, Bora said.
