Akhilesh wants control over ticket distribution

Shivpal Yadav said his resignation as the state party chief had been rejected by Mulayam Singh.

However, developments on September 16 suggested that some kind of truce had been arrived at with a decision to reinstate Gayatri Prajapati, the former Mining Minister, which would nail Akhilesh’s claims of having zero-tolerance for corruption.

“I have a longer experience with Netaji (Mulayam Singh Yadav), I have been with Netaji since the age of 15″.

In a tit-for-tat action, Mulayam took away the post of UP Samajwadi Party chief from his son Akhilesh, perhaps to pacify Shivpal. “The only consensus so far emerging from within the party and the UP government is, as a senior SP leader said:if this carries on, we might as well not contest the Assembly elections”.

Young cooperator and PCF Chairman Aditya Yadav who is the son of Shivpal has also reportedly resigned from the Chairmanship of Pradeshik Cooperative Federation- a body which was in the vanguard supplying agricultural inputs from seeds to fertilizers to the farmers of the state.

Akhilesh also indicated that there were some issues left to be resolved by indirectly hitting out at SP’s Rajya Sabha MP Amar Singh who, his camp has indicated, was fuelling the rift.

The war within the Samajwadi Party erupted on Tuesday when Akhilesh Yadav ousted the Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary, another Shivpal protege, after earlier showing the door to Prajapati.

However, Akhilesh’s position seems to have been compromised as nothing has been said yet about his reinstatement as the party’s state president, a post from which Mulayam removed him, obviously to spite him for not carrying out netaji’s biddings. A day after he was replaced, the chief minister stripped his uncle Shivpal of three key portfolios.

On Friday morning at 19, Vikramaditya Marg, the Lucknow office of Samajwadi Party (SP), its 77-year-old patriarch witnessed something he had always feared – one of SP’s worst crises since its inception in 1992.

On Akhilesh’s demand for more say in ticket distribution, he said, “Netaji will decide on ticket distribution”.

But Mulayam Singh’s comments notwithstanding, it was clear that the cracks within the Samajwadi Party remained intact.

He also said that Samajwadi Party has fulfilled many promises – some in their party manifesto and others which were not included at the time.

Sources said that no decision was taken on Shivpal’s resignation or his status in the cabinet and party.

“Let the chief minister run the government”.

They accused Akhilesh Yadav of humiliating Shivpal Yadav, and insisted that the Chief Minister should apologize to his uncle by touching his feet and seeking forgiveness. While stating that everyone had to abide by netaji, he added that there are some decision which he had to take on his own. On Wednesday, he had a meeting with Mulayam Singh in Delhi and then was told to come to Lucknow to douse the family fire that threatens the prospects of the SP ahead of the coming elections.

No fig leaf of decorum can now hide the rift between Akhilesh Yadav and Mulayam Singh
