The line dividing Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav and his uncle Shivpal Yadav is now firmly etched. Though Mulayam had told Singhal that he concurred with his son’s decision, the SP chief was persuaded by Singh and called up Akhilesh, asking him to reinstate the sacked bureaucrat. “I will speak to you (media) in Lucknow”, he said, adding that “he (Shivpal) is not angry”. Still he has been painted as a villain.

Mulayam is likely to reach Lucknow on Friday morning amid indications that he may have a one-on-one meeting with Akhilesh there. As of now, all eyes are on Mulayam, who is huddled in a meeting with senior party leaders in Delhi for a patch-up between “chacha-bhatija (uncle-nephew)”.

Things came to a head after Shivpal was made the new party chief in UP, to succeed Akhilesh.

This is one of several instance of differences emerging between the Chief Minister and Cabinet Minister Shivpal Yadav including the proposed merger of Qaumi Ekta Dal’s merger with SP.

“Whatever Netaji (Mulayam Singh) decides has to be adhered by everyone in the party”. Many SP leaders in UP, some of them close to the CM, said pressure was building up on Singhal because he was perceived as being a confidant of Shivpal, who had been feuding with Akhilesh.

“A split in the party can be ruled out so far as Netaji is alive”.

Governor Ram Naik accepted the Chief Minister’s recommendation to sack them, a Raj Bhawan communique said. Barely 48 hours after the court rejected the government’s plea to withdraw the CBI probe against the mining minister, Akhilesh cracked the whip on him and ordered Prajapati’s ouster from his cabinet. “I will follow netaji’s directions and will fulfill responsibilities given by him”, Shivpal said.

He also referred to Amar Singh as “outsiders” whose presence is an obstacle to the smooth functioning of the party.

However, he also went ahead to confirm that he is the CM. “It is the discretion of CM to give or take portfolios and remove officers and keep his advisors. Everyone listens to Netaji (Mulayam Singh Yadav)”.

“There may be problems in the government, but not in the family”, he said on the sidelines of an event at his official residence.
