The shutdown happened hours after a series of terrorist attacks began in and around Paris that have reportedly killed dozens. He will be joined by luminaries from around the world, with celebrities like Ryan Reynolds and Jared Leto sharing the same platform as global leaders like Kofi Annan, the former United Nations Secretary-General, and President Freancois Hollande of France.

Besides Gore, who helped negotiate the 1997 climate treaty that failed to control global warming, the broadcast was to feature musical performances by Elton John, Duran Duran and others.

Gore will also host a 24-hour telethon from the Eiffel Tower.

Pharell Williams, too, took to his Twitter account to express his emotions.

The initiative, co-founded by former American vice-president Al Gore, started at 9 a.m. PT, but circumstances demanded for Gore to go live to release a statement calling off the programme. “We send our condolences to the families of those who have been killed or injured”.

The event is produced by The Climate Reality Project, a nonprofit centered on education and advocacy surrounding climate change, and Live Earth, a concert event that focuses on environmental awareness.
