AL police: Officer tased, fatally shot suspect during altercation
Authorities were called to the 3400 block of E. University Boulevard at Chateau Apartments at about 6 p.m. Thursday on a report of an assault. “Mr. Tevis continued to act very agitated toward the officer, who believed Mr. Tevis was either under the influence of illegal drugs or suffering from a mental episode”.

Suddenly, and without warning, Tevis hit the officer at least once and the two began struggling.
The officer used his taser and when the suspect didn’t stop, police say the officer drew his firearm and shot the suspect. The officer went to the second floor walkway of the apartments and tried speaking with Tevis to understand what was going on.
Investigators say the officer was then able to push Tevis back and they both fell down, continuing to struggle.
Mason said the officer deployed his taser, but it was ineffective at stopping the suspect’s assault. He told the officer Tevis was making threatening remarks toward him. The police officer fired his weapon and shot the man.
Tevis was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Tuscaloosa Police haven’t released the name of the 50-year-old killed in the incident.
The officer was treated for injuries at DCH Regional Medical Center. The Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office will conduct it’s own investigation into the shooting, independent from the Tuscaloosa Police Department.
