Alabama Blanks Michigan State to Head to National Championship
The national title game January 11 in Glendale, Ariz., is a Southern dream matchup.

Nick Saban said he saw something in his team coming into the Cotton Bowl that he had never seen before.
Jake Coker played the game of his career, hooking up with Calvin Ridley for two touchdowns, and second-ranked Alabama aired it out to beat No. 3 Michigan State 38-0 on Thursday night and advance to the national championship game.
“I think he was the best player in America before this game, so I think it’s just the icing on the cake”, Stanford coach David Shaw said. “I think this year we wanted to sort of take the game”.
Alabama Coach Nick Saban was enjoying Alabama’s 38-0 win over Michigan State Thursday night in the Cotton Bowl, aka College Football Playoff Semifinal Game.
It’s on us to go out there and get open. The Crimson Tide throttled Michigan State 38-0 in a game that was over early.
Michigan State has won at least 11 games in five of the last six seasons. The 286 yards were a career best for Coker, who completed 25 of 30 and threw for two touchdowns.
Ridley was brilliant, streaking by defenders on deep throws and outfighting them on jump balls. Halfway through the second quarter, a 50-yard toss to freshman receiver Calvin Ridley set up a one-yard touchdown run from Heisman victor Derrick Henry. It burned Alabama so badly to be beaten in the College Football Playoff semifinals a year ago that the Crimson Tide was determined to handle its business differently this time around.
The only defense that Clemson has faced with anywhere near Alabama’s ability against the run was Boston College, though, and the Tigers managed just 112 yards on the ground in that contest. (OK, I might be insane but not in this case.) As alternately goofy and disastrous as Kiffin has been as a head coach, he has been a very good offensive coordinator in Tuscaloosa and done wonders developing two quarterbacks of obviously limited talent – Blake Sims last year and Jake Coker this year.
The celebration at that point was pretty tame on the Alabama sideline. And he still has one more game. AT&T Stadium in North Texas – where Alabama started its season by blowing out a Big Ten team (Wisconsin) – had turned into Tuscaloosa west. Happy New Year, indeed. “And I said ’15 for 15, ‘ with the message being let’s make them print 15 tickets this year, somehow, some way”.
“Any time you have a team from your league in the national championship game, it’s a great thing”, ACC Commissioner John Swofford said. In chilly Dallas there was nothing to do but practice and that was fine by them.
“This is no surprise”, Allen said. It’s obsessive attention to detail, commitment to making daily progress and a we-before-me mindset. “We’ve got a bunch of fighters on this team that will never give up”.
Michigan State embraced its role as the underdog and came in expecting to slug it out with the Tide and it smothering defense and hammering Heisman victor.
Instead it was a knockout. “We came out there, stopped the run and made them start passing the ball”. The secondary, the third-ranked unit’s Achilles’ heel, was strong in coverage, highlighted by Jones’ interception in the end zone to close the first half.
“I play a lot in our base defense so it felt good running around out there”, Hamilton continued. Running behind the blocks of defensive linemen A’Shawn Robinson and Jarran Reed, Henry punched it in for his SEC-record breaking 24th touchdown, and with 5:36 left in the first half it was 7-0 Tide. When Cook finally found a rhythm and had the Spartans at the Alabama 12 late in the first half, he underthrew Aaron Burnbridge for an easy interception by Cyrus Jones near the goal line.
News: Michigan State has a long way to go to be elite.
