Mr Lewis, a Democrat, said on Friday he would not attend Mr Trump’s inauguration on 20 January on the grounds that he did not see the Republican as a legitimate president.

“I am deeply disappointed in the way President-elect Trump attacked Rep. John Lewis, a personal friend and hero to so many Americans”, Capuano said, in a statement provided by the spokeswoman.
At this time, more than three dozen Democratic lawmakers have pledged to opt-out of Trump’s inauguration Friday.
After Lewis said this would be the only inauguration he will have missed during his time in Congress, Trump blasted out tweets calling Lewis a liar, pointing out that Lewis sat out George W. Bush’s inauguration in 2001.
With President-elect Donald Trump’s feud with Congressman John Lewis in full swing, Trevor Noah weighed in on the matter Monday night.
Lewis, D-Ga., said in an interview last week that he did not view Trump as a “legitimate president” because Russian Federation “helped destroy the candidacy of Hillary Clinton”.
“Democrats are in a situation right now where they’re wondering, ‘Should we treat Republicans the way they treated Obama when he came into office?'” Page said.
Lewis told host Chuck Todd on the Sunday, Jan. 15 edition of NBC’s “Meet The Press”, that he believed that Trump is not a legitimate president. “I won’t be attending Donald Trump’s i n a u g u r a – tion”. I cannot celebrate it, I should prepare for resistance, ‘ California lawmaker, Barbara Lee, said. “Congressmen and local elected officials, state elected officials, who are starting to back up and say “I can’t be a part of this”.
Minnesota Sens. Al Franken and Amy Klobuchar, both Democrats, are expected to attend the inauguration, their offices said, as did the office of Rep. Collin Peterson, another Minnesota Democrat. While Lewis said he believes in forgiveness and trying to work with people, the civil rights icon said it will be “very difficult” to work with Trump. But then I hear him crying the blues about Mr. Trump and saying he’s an illegitimate president, I take offense to that.
