Alabama hires Greg Goff to coach baseball team

Not long into his first season as a head coach at Division II Montevallo, an hour southeast of where he now stood, Greg Goff remembers one of his new players wearing a hat with Alabama’s script “A”.

Athletic director Bill Battle called Goff a proven victor who should be able to help Alabama return to former glory.

His previous stops at Louisiana Tech and Campbell saw him recruit heavily from the junior college ranks, something he hopes to continue with the Tide. He mentioned seeing a number of kids from Alabama on rosters from other schools at the Mississippi State regional and said that would have to change.

Prior to his arrival at Louisiana Tech, Goff was head coach at Campbell University for seven seasons during which time his teams put together a 224-174 record in the Big South and Atlantic Sun Conferences with an appearance in the NCAA Regionals in 2014.

“Greg has been a victor at every stop along the way, and he has done it with class”.

“I am very happy to announce that we have reached an agreement with Greg Goff to become our next head baseball coach at the University of Alabama”, said Battle in a university press release.

“Coming here and to have that name brand and have the great success that so many sports are having at the University of Alabama, that’s what I want to be apart of”, Goff said Friday.

“Greg is a proven victor as a head coach, with an impressive record of developing programs into championship-caliber teams”, Alabama athletics director Bill Battle said.

In his two years as head coach at LA Tech, Goff led the Bulldogs to a 67-47 overall record, including 42 wins in 2016 and the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1987. “I wouldn’t have left Ruston, Louisiana, if it wasn’t for my dream job”.

“This facility, we should be hosting regionals, and that’s our goal”, Goff said. “I said, ‘My God, they really don’t like us; they just threw a baseball at me.’ I looked around, and there wasn’t a baseball”. I can promise you this: We’re going to do things right every single day. “I thought either I’m getting too old or I’m getting too excited”.

“I want these guys to have a great experience here”, he said.

Goff, who celebrated his 21st anniversary with his wife Tina on Friday, said he is honored and excited to be a part of the Alabama family. “This is the University of Montevallo and we’re going to be proud of where we are”.
