Alabama places 4th in AP’s Top 100 of all-time college football

The top of the list isn’t too surprising as Ohio State, Oklahoma, Notre Dame and Alabama take up the top 5 spots.

The Associated Press has been ranking the best teams in college football since 1936.

To determine an all-time top 100 for the first time, the AP counted poll appearances (one point) to mark consistency, No. 1 rankings (one bonus point) to acknowledge elite programs and gave a bonus for championships won (10 points).

The Sooners came in at No. 2 with 1,055 points earned, just 57 points behind top-ranked Ohio State. Based most likely on the fact that Louisville didn’t have an FBS program until late in the game, they are actually behind Boston College at 62, and Wake Forest is the lowest rated ACC school at 80. The second-highest ranked SEC team is Florida at No. 10.

The AP noted that the Sooners lead all programs by ranking in the top five in percentage of poll appearances in five decades (1950s, ’70s, ’80s, 2000s, ’10s). As AP college football writer Ralph Russo pointed out, the big three schools from Florida (Florida, Florida State, Miami) became staples in the polls starting in the 1980s. LSU checks in third for the conference at No. 11. Tennessee 15. Georgia 16.
