Coker’s injury further complicates a Tide quarterback competition that remains unsettled and wide-open following the first of two preseason scrimmages Saturday.

That competition has a new twist as Nick Saban announced on Monday that Coker would miss “several days” of practice with a foot injury.

Alabama quarterback Jacob Coker (14) rolls out to pass during the first half of Alabama’s spring NCAA college football … “So I think that was a hard situation he was put in, and he handled it really well and continues to work really hard”. So I’m just waiting for somebody, when they sort of break out and are having a couple good days, that they say ‘OK, I’m ready to do this’. “You have to win the team. As bad as I want to make it happen I can’t make it happen”.

The former backup to Jameis Winston at Florida State was beaten out by Blake Sims for the starting job last season. Blake Barnett and David Cornwell are also competing for that spot. “I can’t make it happen”, Saban said of the position battle. Alabama’s final preseason scrimmage will be Saturday.

“The quarterback is obviously the commander of the offense”, Kelly said.
