Alabama rides well-rounded offense into title game against Clemson
The Alabama Crimson Tide continue to display their dominance in the college football world, annihilating the Michigan State Spartans, 38-0, in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic on New Year’s Eve. “I think this year we wanted to sort of take the game and really thought our guys had a vision of what they wanted and everybody paid the price for what they had to do in preparation”. “That’s the first time all year that happened”.

Clemson is now 14-0 on the season and 7-7 against the spread following Thursday’s win, while Alabama is 13-1 overall and 8-6 against the spread. The Spartans (12-2) won the Big Ten and reached the playoff, and Michigan State fans can look back on three of the most pulsating victories in the program’s history.
In Alabama’s last three games, Obasohan finished with 12 points once, and failed to score double digit points twice after he started the season scoring 17 or more points in five of his first eight games.
Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield passed for 311 yards, completing 26-of-41 passes, and he had a touchdown pass. But he had two interceptions on key plays by Clemson linebackers B.J.
“There’s going to be a number of times where they throw the ball deep”, Tressel added. His two 50-yard strikes to Calvin Ridley, one in each half, were major momentum-makers for the Crimson Tide. Alabama’s defensive front was so good – against a pretty good offensive line – that it got pressure on Cook despite often rushing only four. It was the Spartan’s fourth bowl win in as many seasons, which came after losses in their previous seven bowl games.
Considering quarterback Jake Coker’s limited mobility, Robinson’s ability to contain Lawson will be critical to Alabama generating a consistent passing attack.
They made him look better than the quarterback that had sat in his seat just minutes before.
Alabama began the second half with a 15-5 run to push its lead to 48-33.
Then it hit Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables: There’s one game left.
“I think that’s why he was elected captain by his teammates and he’s respected so much because of his toughness and his competitive spirit and how he’s a real team guy”, Saban said. Michigan State only managed to muster 29 rushing yards and 239 total yards for the game.
The Tide blew a 21-6 lead and lost 42-35 to Ohio State in last season’s semifinals, giving the team all the motivation it needed to get back to the championship round.
The Tide players talked about how some players were too concerned about where they would be drafted or partying on Bourbon Street last season.
“We’re excited”, Allen said.
He’s at four and counting, and a fifth title would elevate him into that rarefied air occupied by a single person – the late and legendary Paul “Bear” Bryant, who essentially created the Alabama football tradition as we know it.
Michigan State embraced its role as the underdog and came in expecting to slug it out with the Tide and it smothering defense and hammering Heisman victor. The Spartans offensive line watched video of the 1971 Ali-Frazier fight to prepare.

Instead it was a knockout. “We sold out to stop the run”. Coker threw quick and short to the outside and Henry didn’t touch the ball on Alabama’s first drive and got it twice for seven yards on its second. Can’t blame Coker for looking at Ridley first. Alabama played there several times, including a season-opening win over Wisconsin. Cook leaves with a 34-5 record as a starter.
