Alabama running back Derrick Henry has won the 2015 Heisman Trophy.
Derrick Henry of Alabama became the third running back to win the Heisman Trophy in the last 16 years when he was presented with the award Saturday in NY.
McCaffrey’s claim revolved in part around breaking Barry Sanders’ single-season record for all-purpose yards (3,250).
The junior picked up steam as the season wore on.
McCaffrey and the Cardinal still have plenty to play for this season.
Henry was overshadowed at the beginning of the season by Louisiana State’s Leonard Fournette. Sanders was the Heisman victor that year. He rushed for more yards than 53 schools and scored more rushing touchdowns than 68. “Christian’s coming back and he’s going to come back with even more fire than you saw this year”. The two Alabama players are the only running backs to win it since Ron Dayne in 1999 since Reggie Bush’s award was vacated in 2005. McCaffrey matches Gerhart for the highest voting finish by a Stanford running back. A week later, Henry’s 143 yards on 28 runs included the game-winner with 2:24 left in the 19-14 win over Tennessee.
“First time I ever walked into Valor and saw him practice I was like, he’s different, he’s special”, he said.
“One of the things that pleases me about Derrick being recognized as being the outstanding player in college football by winning this award is sometimes as a coach you look at what does a particular player do for his team”, Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban said.
“The 6-3, 242-pounder from Yulee, Fla., set an SEC single-season-record in 2015 with 1,986 rushing yards”. He has a great chance to break that record come January.
“It’s the Heisman”, Henry said about three and a half hours before the announcement.
It was the closest Heisman voting 2011, when Baylor’s Robert Griffin beat out Stanford’s Andrew Luck by 280 points, but still a comfortable victory for Henry.
Watson has led the Clemson Tigers to a flawless 13-0 record, the top ranking in the nation, and the number-one seed in the College Football Playoff. This year Watson had a 69.5 passing percentage.
Against Auburn and Florida, he carried the ball an astounding 90 times for 460 yards and finished the season by tying the SEC record with 23 rushing touchdowns. Watson was awarded the Davey O’Brien Trophy, given to the nation’s best quarterback. It was the order everyone expected – Henry, McCaffrey and Watson – but No. 4 was a bit of a question mark, Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield was the next guy up, but he only received 34 first place votes and just 334 total points.

It started with a 147-yard night on just 13 runs in the season opener against Wisconsin.
