Alabama Shakes ready to rock at Grammy Awards

Alabama Shakes won the award for best non-classical engineered album for Sound & Color. More than 70 awards were handed out this afternoon and early evening, before the Grammys broadcast at 7 p.m. Central on CBS. “Two Grammys in one day, that’s insane”, she added moments later while accepting the award for Best Alternative Music Album.

While the ultimately lost Album of the Year to Taylor Swift’s “1989”, they certainly did not leave empty-handed.

“I never thought I’d be here doing this”, said Howard, receiving the award for rock performance on behalf of her bandmates standing behind her. “When we started this, we were in high school – me and our bass player right here – and we just did it for fun. We received this”, Howard stated. And later: “We’re going to take it home for the 256”, referring to the area code in the band’s hometown.

The group’s most recent album also won the award for best alternative music album, beating fellow alternative rock band Wilco’s latest release, Star Wars, Tame Impala’s Currents and even My Morning Jacket’s The Waterfall, as well as Bjork’s latest Vulnicura.

The 27-year-old singer and the rest of the group – Zac Cockrell, Heath Fogg, Steve Johnson, and Ben Tanner – performed their song “Don’t Wanna Fight” for the crowd.

While the Alabama Shakes spent much of 2015 on the road in support of Sound and Color, the group has a handful of South American dates lined up this spring, followed by a North American trek that includes sets at Hangout Festival, Sasquatch and Forecastle.
