Police said they received a 911 call about 3:34 p.m. (7:34 p.m. ET) from Mayor Greg Fisk’s adult son.

Fisk was elected mayor of the state capital in October over Merril Sandford with 65 percent of the vote.

Police say rumors that an assault occurred in connection with Fisk’s death are “speculation”.

Detectives with the Juneau Police Department are investigating the case, while the medical examiner’s office will conduct the autopsy. An autopsy will be performed to determine his cause of death.

Soon after Fisk was found dead, rumors began spreading around town about a possible assault or beating.

Becker said that Fisk has been a personal friend of the family to her and her husband.

Police Chief Bryce Johnson told the Juneau Empire newspaper there was no evidence of forced entry into Mayor Greg Fisk’s home.

“The mayor did have injuries”, Juneau police spokesperson Erann Kalwara told Mashable, confirming local reports.

After defeating Sanford, who served as Mayor for three years, Fisk himself admitted, “I’m pretty astounded”.

Fisk’s neighbors said you could nearly always find him working in the second-story window of his small red house on Kennedy Street, overlooking downtown Juneau.

Kalwara said Fisk sustained an “injury” but declined to elaborate on the circumstances of the injury or his death, saying the investigation was continuing.

Fisk was elected October 6 and sworn in October 20.

“For that potential to be snuffed out is just a crushing loss”, King told the AP.

City meetings scheduled for Monday night were cancelled. “We have a wonderful staff, an assembly that works well together and we’ll continue to do what we need to do, we’re just sad right now”.
