Hours after reviving his hardline rhetoric on immigration, U.S. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump said on Thursday there was “softening” in his immigration plans.

Trump stood firm in his in his supposed immigration policy, promising to deport anyone who enters the USA illegally.

The president of the Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles, Alfonso Aguilar, also said he will no longer support Trump.

The aggressive tone during his speech in Phoenix marked a shift from the NY billionaire’s demeanor earlier in the day, when a much more measured Trump described Mexicans as “amazing people” as he appeared alongside Pena Nieto in Mexico’s capital city.

Perhaps the most surprising proposal was what appeared to be a new standard for immigrants, based on “merit, skill and proficiency” – a test that critics said would have excluded numerous labourers who were early immigrants to the United States.

The issue of what to do with the estimated 11 million people already living in the United States illegally is a divide between Trump and Clinton.

And given the impact Trump’s policy on immigration would have on Mexican immigrants to the US, Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto has spoken out against the GOP candidate’s views. Earlier Thursday, after Trump tweeted that Mexico would pay for the wall, Pena Nieto fired back his own tweet saying that would “never” happen.

“We will break the cycle of amnesty and illegal immigration”, Trump declared to a rowdy crowd in Phoenix.

A day after delivering a hard-line speech on immigration, Donald Trump is continuing to stress his America-first approach.

At a news conference immediately following the closed-door session, Trump told reporters: “We did discuss the wall”.

Carlos Loret de Mola was outraged that “the federal government placed itself at the service of a US candidate who has done nothing but insult Mexicans”.

Mr Trump repeated comments he made in the immigration speech when he tweeted: “Mexico will pay for the wall!”.

He said: ‘What is a fact is that in the face of candidate Trump’s postures and positions, which clearly represent a threat to the future of Mexico, it was necessary to talk.

Donald Trump says that that, if he’s elected president, he’ll work on “promoting American pride and patriotism in America’s schools”. ” … Well, who’s going to pay for it?”

“I love the people of Arizona, and together we’re going to win the White House in November”, he said.
