Alex Ovechkin reached a career milestone at a rapid pace and in signature fashion.

Ovechkin also insisted his desire to score has never waned.

The Capitals hopped over the bench to embrace Ovechkin, who waved to the fans. “To get 500 in this league with the way everybody is playing, the goalies, it’s pretty cool”. “It’s a history moment”.

Fans and players celebrate after Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin, left, of Russian Federation, scored his 501st career goal, during the third period of an NHL hockey game in Washington on Sunday, Jan. 10, 2016.

The Washington Capitals have a special player, doing very special things. “It’s an awesome feeling. It’s a big moment for him and the city of Washington”. For good measure, he would add another goal later in the game, finishing game No. 801 with 501 goals, joining Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Mike Bossy and Brett Hull as the quickest players to hit 500.

Capitals coach Barry Trotz said this week that he thought Ovechkin was more nervous about passing Fedorov than he was about reaching 500. The Capitals went on to take a 7-1 victory.

Ovechkin was the first overall pick in the 2004 draft by Washington.

The goal was the 25th of the season for Ovechkin, tying him, at least temporarily, with Patrick Kane and Jamie Benn for the league lead. “I admire what he does because he’s a pure goal scorer”.

Matt Duchene had two goals and an assist for Colorado, which had won three in a row and four of six.

The Capitals have won 10 consecutive games at Verizon Center dating to November 21, their longest home winning streak since a franchise-record 13 consecutive games from January 5 – March 6, 2010.

Justin Williams, T.J. Oshie, Zach Sill, Tom Wilson and Dmitry Orlov also scored in the rout.

Ottawa coach Dave Cameron was ready for the Senators to put this one in the past.
