Alex Redmond leaves UCLA football team
Since Jim Mora took over as head coach in 2012, UCLA has become a different program. That being said, the team did win in mostly improbable fashion against undefeated Michigan State, so maybe things even out in the long run. SBN’s Bill Connelly reports that UCLA’s secondary has been particularly effective in defending passes on passing downs, while BruinsNation worries that Mike Riley will try to exploit UCLA’s issues stopping the run. If you would like to discuss another topic, look for a relevant article. Though their passing defense is terrible at #122 (out of 128 teams) allowing 288.2 yards per game through the air, their run defense is elite coming in at #8 in the nation allowing just over 113 yards per game. Rosen was named the Pac-12 Conference freshman offensive player of the year. What’s more, the senior has made 41 straight attempts from 35 yards and less in his career. He hit a 60 yarder and was 20-23 with all misses from over 40 yards. Redmond won’t be nominated for teammate of the year after ditching the Bruins prior to their tilt with Nebraska, but he will pique the NFL’s interest anyway. The Bruins need to capitalize on bad throws and tipped balls against the Cornhuskers, who rank 125th in the country in interceptions thrown with 1.8 per game.

Hollins is optimistic that UCLA (8-4) can change that narrative, arguing that the additional time that the team has had to prepare will pay off. But only twice this season, against BYU and USC, did Rosen have more interceptions than touchdowns in a game, and the Bruins won one of them, the one at home against BYU.
Over the past two weeks, draft-eligible UCLA football players have mostly deferred questions about their futures, intent to direct the focus back to the Bruins’ upcoming bowl game.
“He’s not feeling great, but you know Noel – he coaches ball”, Mora said Tuesday.
But this team wants – it needs – to turn the page on 2015.
Last season, Armstrong rushed an average of 11 times per game, but this season he hasn’t attempted more than 12 in any game, and his season high is 63 yards on the ground. It set a UCLA school record. Josh Rosen, running back Paul Perkins, and company usually answered the call, ranking 23rd in Off. S&P+, but there were some predictable slip-ups. But by taking this stance on their 13th game, the Huskers risk infecting the next phase of Riley’s plan before the calendar flips to 2016.
Enrollment at UCLA, or roughly 15,000 more students than Nebraska. By all rights the season should have been over, but much to my chagrin, the Huskers were able to sneak into the Foster Farms Bowl. Nebraska (5-7) enters this game having been defeated in three of its last five and UCLA (8-4) two of its last three.
I’m still a fan of Armstrong; I believe he can lead this team and I think he’s motivated. Two RB’s still led the way for an overall 4.75 yards-per-carry average.
Also a solid accomplishment: throwing for over 3,500 yards as a true freshman. It will be an honor to get to play UCLA. He’s got major arm talent; very rare arm talent for that point in his career. I was shocked to see UCLA’s time of possession deficit.
