Alex Rodriguez Announces Retirement From Baseball After 22-Year Career

Both Fox Sports and ESPN told Sporting News Sunday night they’re interested in talking to A-Rod about a possible TV role.

Despite the controversy A-Rod has generated over two decades – or maybe because of it – people who hold tickets to his final game are suddenly asking big bucks.

New York Yankees designated hitter Alex Rodriguez reacts after striking out against the Los Angeles Angels at Yankee Stadium on June 6, 2016. No athlete ends his or her career the way you want to; we all want to keep playing forever.

The current “get-in” price for a Yankees game surged to $85, up from $16 ahead of the news but far less than the amount it hit when fellow Bronx Bomber Derek Jeter retired in 2014.

“This is a tough day“, he said at a news conference on Sunday.

Since returning from his 162-game suspension, Rodriguez has returned to the good graces with his relationship with the team and fans but this year it has become apparent keeping Rodriguez on the team creates an awkward situation for all involved. “Saying goodbye may be the hardest part of the job”.

Rodriguez is signed through this year and next season for 21 million a year.

This is a much more abrupt sendoff than the last Yankees star’s retirement. He’s handsome, well-spoken, and showed an ability to provide thoughtful analysis clearly during his postseason stint with Fox Sports a year ago.

The Red Sox got Rodriguez to restructure his contract, allowing him to play for less money.

Admit it: You want one more episode in the must-watch drama that has been Alex Rodriguez’s career. “That wasn’t in the cards”. “And giving me an opportunity to stay involved and mentor the next generation of Yankees”.

“The conversation never went that far”, he said. The cash owed to Rodriguez was put into a separate investment account and is not part of the Rangers current operating budget, a major league source said.

It must be emphasized that Rodriguez is the consummate teammate, and that was shown by the fact that the entire Yankees team came in for his press conference.

“It’s two completely different situations”, Gardner said when he was asked to compare Teixeira’s retirement to Rodriguez’s. Management has told me that I would get a few at-bats on Friday, so I am excited about that.

“I have not thought past the pinstripes”, said Rodriguez. Now 41, he has been mired in one of the worst seasons of his career, hitting just nine home runs with a batting average of.204.

It wasn’t all roses, though: starter James Paxton left Sunday’s game after taking a line drive to his left elbow.

“I think that all along we’ve expected, and a little bit of it is being hopeful, for him to make starts for us this year in September”, Roberts said. “But it doesn’t work that way”.

The fifth-place Tampa Bay Rays will play the fourth-place Yankees at Yankee Stadium, which seats about 54,000 people. “He’s just a student of the game and, because of that, guys want to be around him”.

Alex Rodriguez made a big announcement before Sunday’s game against Cleveland.

“After spending several days discussing this plan with Alex, I am pleased that he will remain a part of our organization moving forward and transition into a role in which I know he can flourish”, Hal Steinbrenner said in a statement.

In March, Rodriguez said he planned to retire at the end of next season.

Rodriguez led the Yankees to their 2009 World Series title, but it’s been a tumultuous tenure since he arrived before the 2004 season in a trade with Texas.

Rodriguez’s 22-year career has been stained by the use of performance-enhancing substances.

Starting in 2008, Rodriguez made six trips to the disabled list in six seasons.

“I have no idea”, Rodriguez said.

“He’s always had some ups and downs, but he’s always gotten back up”, Cashman said. In his 2015 comeback season, A-Rod hit 33 home runs and batted in 86 runs, but his numbers dropped notably this season, and last week, the Yankees informed him he was done for the rest of his contract.

When asked by a reporter what made him decide to step down almost three months before the end of the season, Rodriguez said: “That was the Yankees’ decision and I am at peace with it”.
