“Consolidated global response and effective steps would make it possible to reverse unsafe tendencies in the development of the worldwide situation”, CSTO leaders said in a statement. They will also discuss amendments to the provision on the CSTO coordination council for emergencies as of 6 October 2007. “Particular concerns are caused by the increased militant activity in northern Afghanistan. The Director of the Analytical Center of the Institute of global Studies, Andrey Kazantsev, stressed that Vladimir Putin had in mind the need to unite in the fight against terrorism in Central Asia, which is represented not only by Islamic State, but also other extremist Islamist organizations. A resolution was made to extend the validity of the agreement which regulates issues related to the technical safety of railways on the territory of the CSTO member states.

Tajikistan’s authorities said on Sunday that the renegade general who had attacked government security forces is still alive, contradicting reports from two days earlier that he had been killed. After the CSTO session Alexander Lukashenko will pay a working visit to the Russian Federation where he will take part in the events of the 2nd Belarus-Russia Forum of Regions which will be held in Sochi on 17-18 September.
