Alexander Semin joins Montreal after 3 years with Carolina
The Montreal Canadiens didn’t seem to be doing enough to address their stagnant offense in the off-season – so signing Alexander Semin to a one year deal is surprisingly brilliant.

Semin, whose five-year, $35 million contract was bought out by the Carolina Hurricanes this offseason after its third year, has scored at least 20 goals seven times in his career. We believe his addition to our group of forwards will strengthen our offensive production and our powerplay.
Aside from 2014-15, the 31 year old has been a reliable point producer, collecting at least 42 points in each of the eight prior seasons, including a career year in 2009-2010, where he posted 40 goals and 44 assists in 73 games.
Previously with the Carolina Hurricanes, and the Washington Capitols, Semin is a 6’2 right-winger whose potential may be realized with the Habs.
While he will only make $1.1 million to play for the Canadiens this season, the Hurricanes will be paying him $2.3 million to not play for them (through the 2020-21 season) as a part of their buyout.
The 31-year-old Russian was a first-round pick of the Washington Capitals in the 2002 National Hockey League draft.
Montreal is another fresh start for Semin.
Gandler also commented on newly signed Chicago Blackhawk Viktor Tikhonov, who reportedly received an offer from SKA Saint Petersburg that was double what he will be paid in the Windy City.

“I like Montreal”, Semin said. “He said it’s coming to us and we’ll try to win the Stanley Cup”.
