Alfa Romeo is tapping into its heritage by reinstating the “Veloce” moniker to its range of midsize models, with the classic Giulietta from 60 years ago being the first to wear the codename. Speaking of choice, the engines are two: turbocharged 2.0-liter petrol or turbodiesel 2.2-liter unit. Both engines are mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission which transmits the power through all four wheels. Meanwhile, the diesel packs 210 hp (156 kW) at 3,500 rpm and 347 lb-ft (470 Nm) from a low 1,750 rpm. The interior features new black leather sport seats, a sports steering wheel and aluminum dashboard, central tunnel and door panel inserts. Active safety features are also present, including Forward Collision Warning (FCW) with Autonomous Emergency Brake (AEB) and pedestrian recognition, Integrated Brake System (IBS) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW).

Specific enhancements include a low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve, an air-water intercooler, a secondary engine cooling circuit and unique gear ratios.

Those of you keeping track of Alfa’s every new move should be familiar with the designation of the warm sedan, as the 2016 MiTo line-up saw the admiteddly not-that-boliling-hot Quadrifoglio Verde being renamed Veloce. Called the Giulia AE (Advanced Efficiency), the new model is available on the standard and Super trim levels, and will come with the 180 hp version of the 2.2 litre diesel and an eight-speed automatic. Its drag co-efficiency is also lower than the standard Giulia’s due to its specially designed alloy wheels and a 5mm lower ride height.
