Ali Larijani Reelected Iranian Parliament Speaker

The meeting of supporters for the Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani was held on Friday, May 27, with the participation of 188 representatives, as well as Ali Larijani and the commander of the Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Major General Qassem Soleimani speaking during the meeting.

On Feb. 26. Iranians voted in parliamentary elections, while the results showed the gain of reformists although they could not seize the majority.

The faction confirmed its existence on Friday and is scheduled to take decisions over its candidates for the other Parliament’s board positions on Saturday as Iran’s 10th Parliament starts working.

The interim speaker means the election of a chair temporarily for a few days until the lawmakers meet again to elect the final speaker for one year.

“It is the revolutionary and legal duty of you, the honorable MPs, to make the parliament a firm stronghold against the arrogant powers’ tricks, enchanting and excessive demands, and a bright standing point for the faithful and revolutionary people”, Ayatollah Khamenei said.

The role of the independent members will be critical in the balance of parliament’s partisan powers.

On May 29, Larijani won 173 votes in the 290-seat assembly, while his opponent reformist Mohammad Reza Aref received 103 votes. Pro-Rouhani candidates raised their representation and 60 percent of MPs are first-timers.

“We need interaction to solve the problems and crises of the country”.

He was also the the speaker of the previous parliament dominated by Principlists.
