The school, St Philip’s College in Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, was reportedly hosting students from a Melbourne Jewish school at the time.

“This was an innocent mistake by a teacher who is a respected, honourable and lovely person who got it wrong on the day”, a school spokeswoman said in a statement on Friday.

Herbert told the ABC he had apologised to the Jewish students, who he said were “absolutely fantastic and accepting”.

St Philip´s College principal Roger Herbert said it was an error in judgment and apologies had been made to the exchange students.

“We also contacted the school to say look, this had happened, please understand”.

Bialik College principal Jeremy Stowe-Lindner said the incident was unfortunate but that children were unpredictable and St. Philip’s had taken the right action after the incident.

St Philip’s College is now reviewing its policies to ensure that a similar incident never occurs.

As part of the nationwide annual school event children are encouraged to dress up as their favourite character for a parade or assembly, in celebration of children’s literature.

‘Now she is absolutely shattered that she said that, and I’m really concerned about her wellbeing’.
