Alicia Vikander May Star in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Reboot

Sony never meant to stop with just The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Steven Knight (“Locke”, “Burnt”, “Eastern Promises”) has been tapped to write the screenplay, but here’s the kicker: neither Rooney Mara nor Daniel Craig are expected to reprise their roles, nor is Fincher expected to direct. However, it was not enough for Sony, which predicted the film to be an R-rated, big budget franchise for adults.

That meant to press ahead with bringing the second book, The Girl Who Played With Fire, to the screen would have been a gamble of sorts. Still, the movie cost $90 million and Sony had been apprehensive about moving forward with the series.

Rooney Mara will not reprise her role as hacker heroine Lisbeth Salander in Sony’s forthcoming adaptation of “The Girl in the Spider’s Web” and Sony Pictures is interested in having Alicia Vikander replace her in a proposed reboot of the franchise, an individual familiar with the studio’s thinking has told TheWrap. Larsson passed away in 2004 and it was only after his death that his completed but unpublished novels were discovered. Author David Lagercrantz took up the character and setting. To be fair, Larsson never intended his story to be a “trilogy”. Not surprisingly, they’re looking to make the sequel for cheaper – which is why Craig isn’t returning.

Scott Rudin will return to produce along with Amy Pascal, who greenlit the first film when she was co-chair of Sony.

Overall, it is probably a shrewd move to not adapt Fire and Hornet’s Nest.

The film next in line to “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” jumps to the fourth book and will not include the original cast.

Indeed, if asked to choose, I tend to prefer the Swedish adaptation and Rapace’s version of Lisbeth over the more polished and noirish Fincher/Hollywood take.
