Alistair Brownlee wins triathlon gold, brother Jonathan takes silver in Rio

While the best chances for a medal in the Olympics triathlon come from the United States women, it is worth mentioning that 2012 London Olympics triathlon gold medalist Alistair Brownlee from Great Britain is returning to defend his gold medal at the Rio games.

Jonny upgraded the bronze he won in London as he held off the attentions of South African bronze medallist Henri Schoeman to win silver – finishing six seconds behind his brother.

Brownlee brothers face Spanish test Men’s triathlon, 3pm A 1.5km swim, 40km bike ride and a 10km run awaits the competitors with the medallists likely to complete the course in under two hours.

Over such a long race, anything can happen, but the pair certainly ought to end up on the podium, a welcome boost to Team GB’s medal tally.

Earlier in the day, Britain’s Liam Heath and Jon Schofield scooped a silver in the men’s kayak doubles 200m final.

Last August he had ankle surgery and the decision has paid off. The five-time World Champion’s absence definitely makes things easier for the British quartet.

It was his first major victory for a year and he followed it up with another excellent performance to trumph in Stockholm three weeks later.
