All Blacks snare NZ’s top Halberg award

The Halberg Awards are meant to recognise top feats of New Zealand sportsmen each year and McCullum won the award for being one of the most, if not the most, successful New Zealand leaders in worldwide cricket.

Also nominated are golfer Danny Lee and 2015 IndyCar Series victor Scott Dixon.

Blackcap Kane Williamson won Sportsman of the Year at the Halberg Awards on Thursday night.

Meanwhile, retiring Test skipper Brendon McCullum who plays his last worldwide career match in the next Test, won the Halberg Award for leadership.

During a 14-year worldwide career McCullum has scored 11 Test hundreds – including an historic first New Zealand Test triple century – and has accrued a world record total for global T20 runs scored.

The first award to go their way went to their coach Steve Hansen who beat the likes of Black Caps coach Mike Hesson and Hamish Wilcox, the coach of sailors Blair Tuke and Peter Burling.

New Zealand’s top sports honours, the Halberg Awards, were held last night at Auckland’s Vector Arena.

Ko is nominated for Sportswoman of the Year after becoming the world’s top-ranked women’s golfer, and the youngest player to win a major.

After winning three golds, a silver and two bronze medals at the IPC Swimming World Championships, Sophie Pasco took out the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation Disabled Sportsperson of the Year Award ahead of para-skiier Corey Peters, para-shooter Michael Johnson and fellow para-swimmer Nikita Howarth.

Lydia Ko wins the Evian Championship.

The teenager has stiff competition from cyclist Linda Villumsen, canoer Lisa Carrington and champion swimmer Lauren Boyle.
