The announcement of Jaylen Brown as the Celtics’ first draft selection prompted boos and heckles on the floor of the TD Garden Thursday night.
With the first two picks set in stone (6-foot-10 LSU freshman Ben Simmons to Philly, 6-9 Duke freshman Brandon Ingram to the Lakers), the talk of the National Basketball Association draft was: what would Boston do at No. 3? Positionally, he fits on Boston’s roster and his skill-set/body type naturally blend in with the modern game. He’s insane athletic and handles the ball much better than a typical player of his stature. The same may hold true for rugged 6-11, 254-pounder Ante Zizic, a 19-year-old from Croatia. Boston seems to have reversed on their stance of pushing the needle forward on draft night whether on goal or by outcome, and it’s hard to swallow. I’ve been doing deals one way or another since I think 1986, 30 years, not sports deals necessarily, but just making agreements with people.

It appears the first three picks in the draft are very likely set.

That transitions into the most important lesson the team should have learned at this draft. Stevens and Ainge are both committed for the foreseeable future; when winning multiple championships is the target, there’s no use in settling for modest improvement.
