Officials say commuters should expect major services disruptions on the MARC Brunswick Line Monday.

The Brunswick Line on the MARC Train is now blocked between Union Station and Silver Spring due to a CSX freight train derailment.

A CSX FREIGHT train derailed near a Metro stop in Washington, DC, on Sunday, sending about 10 cars off the tracks and spilling hazardous material from one of them, emergency officials and the railroad company said.

In a release CSX said their continued work in response to the derailment overnight. They say they understand the inconvenience for commuters and are working as quickly as they can.

Authorities have contained a hazardous materials leak after a CSX train derailed in Washington, D.C. over the weekend, but it is still causing problems for the commute this morning. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says it can irritate or burn eyes, skin and mucous membranes.

No injuries were reported, and workers were able to plug a damaged vehicle leaking sodium hydroxide, a chemical often used in detergents and other household products, and contain a separate ethanol leak, according to the Federal Railroad Administration.

Officials found that another derailed auto had been leaking non-hazardous calcium chloride, CSX said.

Crews are offloading ethanol from one vehicle that derailed to ensure that the auto can be moved from the tracks safely.

The Red Line’s Rhode Island Station was also closed and Metro was reporting delays along that line. That leak has also been plugged, the company said.

The train was traveling from Cumberland, Md.to Hamlet, N.C.
