“This is going to be a significant impact to traffic for the next several hours”, said OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt.
Kerry Schmidt said a tire flew off of a tractor-trailer traveling on the southbound lanes of Highway 400 around 9 a.m. and bounced into the northbound lanes hitting the vehicle. One of the wheels began to bounce across the highway and eventually came in to contact with an SUV in the northbound lanes.
A person in the SUV suffered life-threatening injuries as a result.
The collision took place north of King Road, approximately 40 kilometres north of downtown Toronto and just outside the city boundary with Vaughan.
Police will also be looking at the history of the truck’s maintenance to see if there are any prior issues.

Last year, the Ministry of Transportation recorded 82 cases of “separated” wheels on Ontario highways.
