All the Records Star Wars: The Force Awakens Has (And Hasn’t) Broken

With the holiday season over and more films opening like The Revenant’s wide release this weekend, The Force Awakens is expected to drop off and may fall as low as the twenty million dollar-plus range for this weekend.

The 20 highest-grossing films in the US last year accounted for 50 percent of the total box office, up from 42 percent two years ago, Mogil said.

According to Disney, J.J. Abrams’ “Star Wars” earned enough on Wednesday to pass “Avatar’s” $760.5 million lifetime gross.

Avatar was able to earn a whopping $2.78 billion in sales which earned it the highest-grossing film of all time, according to Hollywood Reporter. “We feel [fan support] here and it drives us every day, and it will continue to in the very bright future of ‘Star Wars, ‘” the studio said. In response, a huge thank you was published by the franchise to fans for the utmost and unending support. Even “Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace” surpassed “The Force Awakens”, coming in at 17th place. Beyond its box office success, The Force Awakens seems to have gotten things off on the right foot. Meanwhile in Australia, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is still a long way off from becoming its highest-grossing film.

But many observers expect the film ultimately to challenge for the top spot.

For Star Wars, the film is holding its audience well considering the scope of the numbers involved, but it will surely flame out faster than those two films did.

The James Cameron film took $2.8bn (£1.9bn) across the world, as compared to The Force Awakens worldwide earnings of $1.6bn (£1.09bn) to date. The 1.3 billion-person nation could push the latest “Star Wars” chapter over the threshold of worldwide box office records set by “Avatar”, CNBC reported Thursday.
