Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe and U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann had also been linked with the job.
Those have been hallmarks of the teams he’s managed across the years in the Premier League and Championship, including stops at Bolton, Newcastle, and West Ham.

But he was not taken on – and nearly quit the game until Gillingham stepped in. He is not a manager a club in their position would want to let go of.
HE’S CURRENTLY IN Hartlepool as his Sunderland side play a pre-season friendly at Victoria Park tonight but the game looks like being Sam Allardyce’s last official engagement as the club’s manager. “We’re taking an appropriate amount of time”. “In Portugal we were waiting and waiting and finally we got it”.
Former Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur boss Sherwood has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast that he would be very interested in the Sunderland job, if Allardyce is appointed England manager.
In the meantime, Mourinho has hailed the move to give Allardyce the job and vowed to do all he can to back him.

And Eriksson, who guided England to three successive quarter-finals at major tournaments during his five-year stint at the helm, believes Allardyce’s wealth of Premier League experience will stand him in good stead.
