Allen’s buzzer-beater lifts Duke past Virginia

The win over Louisville seems to be tainted by all the Duke haters who suggest the Louisville players have all quit now that the NCAA tournament appearance is over. The shot went in, Duke won the game 63-62, sending the Cameron Crazies into a frenzy. Virginia scored more points in the second halves in 21-of-24 games this season, but it had only 28 second-half points Saturday after 34 in the first half….

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) – With the game in the balance, Duke guard Grayson Allen powered his way down the lane and flipped the ball off the backboard.

Getty Images This is bold for the simple fact that the Cavaliers don’t allow their opponents to do to much damage on offense, but the Blue Devils are lethal on the offensive end, as they average 84.3 PPG. Duke failed to reach the 70-point mark against Virginia in the last seven matchups…. “[Malcolm] Brogdon made a tough, good shot, … and then we made a great play”. Thing is, you play against a team like Duke, I don’t know what it is, but they do a great job of comin’ out in the third quarter with adjustments.

Virginia took the lead on its ensuing possession on a reverse lay-up from Malcolm Brogdon, setting the stage for Allen’s heroics.

The Virginia Cavaliers will travel to play the Duke Blue Devils in an ACC game on Saturday.

The Panthers (0-1) opened the scoring and trailed by just three at the half before the Blue Devils (1-0) pulled away in the second half. The visitors tried to set Brogdon up off a screen in the corner, but Duke had that covered so the ball ended up in Marial Shayok’s hands on the right wing.

A four-game winning streak has Duke (19-6) at No. 20 and if the Blue Devils go on a run similar to their last one they will be ranked until sometime in the 2024-25 season.

Graham hit three of his six 3-pointers in the final five minutes as Kansas (21-4, 9-3) defeated Oklahoma for the second time this season. It was a most thrilling win for Duke as Grayson Allen beat the buzzer with a driving layup. That duo combined 40 points as they took 33 of the team’s 51 shots.

The Panthers (16-11, 8-6 Missouri Valley) blew a 15-point second-half lead before pulling back ahead on consecutive baskets by Lohaus with about 6 minutes left in the game.

“We weren’t very bad in the games that we lost”, Krzyzewski said. Anthony Gill added 12 points for the Cavaliers. On Krzyzewski’s 69th birthday? Jahlil Okafor and Tyus Jones, two stars on Duke’s 2015 national championship team, were among those in the crowd as the NBA is on an All-Star break….

Virginia comes back to Charlottesville on Monday. night to host NC State at 7 pm.

All of those teams also got rolling before the first of two annually scheduled matchups with the Tar Heels: For the fourth straight year, Duke brings at least a four-game winning streak into that first UNC game.
