The strike could impact Verizon’s Fios internet, phone and TV services across several states but does not include the wireless business. They had trained thousands of non-union employees over the past years to ensure no disruption in services.

The Associated Press said union officials had revealed a total of 39,000 workers had walked off the job on Wednesday after talks with the company broke down last week and no new negotiations were scheduled. Workers went on a strike due to contract conflicts but that strike ended after just two weeks.
But Verizon’s chief administrative officer said: “Since last June, we’ve worked diligently to try and reach agreements that would be good for our employees….”
The rank-and-file workers went on strike this week to protest the telecom giant’s decision to freeze pensions, chip away at workers’ job security and outsource jobs to contractors.
“But we’ve also had some folks who said, ‘Get back to work, ‘” she said.
He said the distinction between Verizon’s land-line business and its wireless cellular business is artificial because both networks depend on the same local switching stations in cities and towns all over MA. “We’ve seen our workers give up a lot over the last couple contracts and I don’t think we can give up any more”.
“I figure it will be a long one, yeah”, Union Representative Leabern Kennedy said.
The union also claims Verizon won’t negotiate with people who work in Verizon stores and is closing call centers. “We want them to succeed because they when they succeed, our members succeed”.
According to the Communications Workers of America and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, negotiations have paused because Verizon wants to halt pensions, make layoffs easier, and use more contract workers.
The striking employees say Verizon wants to lower wages and ship some jobs overseas.
Verizon said that it is prepared to serve its customers despite the strike. The company said customer service remains their priority but the strike could delay installations and repairs.
“You are standing up not just for justice for Verizon workers, you’re standing up for millions of Americans. and you’re telling corporate America that they can not have it all”, Sanders told the striking workers.
In a statement, Verizon said the unions rejected its offer on Tuesday to seek help from the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service.
