Consistent with Takata’s earlier filings, the National Highway Traffic Safety Association says the driver’s-side airbag inflators can deploy with too much force and rupture, sending metal fragments into occupants.

The second new recall involves 341,000 Honda Accords sold during the 2008 to 2010 model-years.

Honda said in its dealer memo that it will recall the vehicles, but that replacement parts are unavailable and won’t be on hand until late summer.

Honda has said in the past that it will provide loaner cars for owners with vehicles under Takata recall if parts are not yet available.

Auto makers in the USA are recalling more than 24 million vehicles with Takata air bags, which can explode and spray shrapnel.

The Continental recall comes on the heels of widening recalls of rupture-prone Takata air bags linked to almost a dozen deaths globally.

In October, Daimler’s Mercedes-Benz USA unit recalled 126,000 2008-MY 2009 C-Class and 2010 Mercedes Benz GLK-Class vehicles to address the issue.

Preliminary indications are that as many as 5 million vehicles may ultimately need to be recalled to replace the airbag control modules.

He said: “Honda will contact all affected customers in the coming weeks”.

Automakers will replace the computers at no cost to owners, according to documents.

Continental will now contact all of the automakers who are affected by this recall, with some of the affected vehicles dating back to 2006.

Fiat Chrysler issued one, as well, covering some 112,000 vehicles. It also said there have been 74 injury allegations related to airbags that did not deploy but those aren’t confirmed. The company says moisture can get into an electronic control unit and cause it to malfunction. A list of specific vehicle identification numbers (VIN) included in the recall has yet to be determined, and a VIN search at Honda or Acura websites or the NTHSA recall site is not yet possible. A spokesperson from American Honda Motor Co., said that it’s been a long-standing policy for Honda to require dealers to have all vehicles with open recalls repaired prior to sale. However, due to the large volume of new inflators needed to complete this recall, the necessary replacement parts are not expected to be available until fall 2016.
