Alonso ends miserable run with a point at last

Saturday’s Silverstone agony was compounded when the team put one of Button’s tyres on Alonso’s auto – prompting another joke by the Briton that it explained why his team mate had been “so quick”. “It was a big mess as we arrived at Turn Three”, said Alonso. “If we have issues we talk among ourselves, as that is the only way to improve the situation”.

When the Swede fitted a new set of slick tyres one lap before the heaviest rain of the afternoon hit Silverstone, it was Alonso’s cue to take tenth place in a vehicle already shod with more suitable intermediate Pirellis. I think our aim has to be to score points this weekend. The impact turned the auto off. The engine was not running so I obviously stopped. The whole team is incredibly focused – they’ve been working day and night to improve the auto – and we all know this is a long-term project, and there are no magic solutions, but to get a decent result, and to put some points on the table, is always important. “I love coming here”.
