Amazon has finally launched retail operations in Mexico, allowing consumers to buy millions of items ranging from consumer electronics to video games and software.
Amazon.com.mx is a Spanish-language storefront with millions of items available for customers in Mexico.
Mexican sellers can utilize FBA to let Amazon handle customer service, shipping, and fulfillment.
Hoping to capture some of Mexico’s growth, Amazon said it opened its physical goods store there in a bigger way than it had with at any other worldwide Amazon website at launch.
In a release, it said customers in Mexico also have the option of picking up their purchases from hundreds of locations across the country.
Now what: Amazon has its work cut out for it. The company not only has to launch a website in a country which has not fully embraced online shopping, it also needs to build out a local group of third-party marketplace sellers and work around some of the problems special to the country.
Furthermore, Amazon is establishing its online selling service and fulfillment for Mexican businesses and sellers. It was also reported that Mexico could experience an increase in sales of 150 percent over a five-year period from 2013 to 2018 ($2.2 billion to $5.5 billion).
News of Amazon’s plans to expand in Mexico were announced last week, but today marks the official announcement and the launch of the new site.
The country’s e-commerce sector is soaring at a rate of 34 percent per year. “Despite a number of clear challenges, Mexico shows tremendous opportunity online: growth in 2014 will be in excess of 20% and mobile is taking off”.

“Mexico is rebounding from the global recession and is now the second biggest Latin American (LATAM) economy behind Brazil”, wrote Ekos Global in a report. This has led to major companies in the US and Europe to start focusing on Mexico instead, Forrester analyst Zia Daniell Wigder said in a blog post Tuesday about Amazon’s move.
