The Cauvery River, which originates in Karnataka and flows into Tamil Nadu, has been the source of a bitter water dispute for decades.
“Such disputes can only be resolved through negotiations and a mutual agreement on how these waters are to be shared”.
Indian and foreign companies reopened offices and staff trickled back to work in the technology capital Bengaluru on Wednesday, after two days of violent protests over access to water from a river severely disrupted life in the city. “We are emotional on the issue of land, water and language, but we should not forget that humanity and human relationship within us is above all this”, Siddaramaiah said.
Wipro employees will work on September 17 to make up for the holiday on Tuesday, spokeswoman Subhashini Pattabhiraman said in an e-mail.
One protester died and two others were injured after police opened fire to disperse the crowd, KSR Charan Reddy, a senior police official, told CNN. Curfew continued in 16 police station areas as the state had a peaceful celebration of Bakrid and Onam harvest festival. “We will not allow anyone to take law into their hands and we want your cooperation for this”, he said.
The apex court on Monday had delivered the verdict on Karnataka’s plea to reduce the amount of water to be released from the Cauvery river to Tamil Nadu.
However, angry truck owners in Tamil Nadu said that they would hold a demonstration in Hosur town, condemning the burning of around 45 trucks by hooligans in Karnataka. “As we hope the situation to get better soon, we are trying to mitigate all customer impact by keeping them informed about expected delays”, said Neeraj Aggarwal, Head – Supply Chain Operations at Flipkart, according to a report in NDTV.
