Amazon Hikes Free Shipping Minimum to $49 for Non-Prime Members

Amazon used to provide free shipping for orders starting at 35 dollars, but it will change that now.

Less than three years ago, Amazon raised the minimum to $35, after years of a $25 minimum price to qualify for free shipping.

Under free shipping, the purchased items will be delivered within five to eight business days after all the items have become available to be sent out. The $25 free shipping minimum still applies to books.

“I will go to eBay and save on tax”, one commenter wrote. “From time to time, we review our shipping options”, a company spokeswoman told CNNMoney. Prime members still end up paying for some digital content. Prime members also lose money if they don’t shop online enough, or buy products from independent third-party vendors that don’t fall into the qualified items category that is eligible for free Prime shipping. Tens of millions of people are now Amazon Prime members. That is 11.6 % of the company’s total turnover, while it only gets 6.5 billion dollars (so far) from Fulfillment by Amazon and Amazon Prime, which leaves 5 billion dollars as a cost.

On average, Amazon Prime members spend just around $1,500 a year compared to the non-Prime customer who spends only about $625, according to Customer Intelligence Research Partners.
