Amazon Instant Video app for Apple TV Launching in a Few Weeks

The fact that Amazon will have an app on Apple TV is a little bit surprising, considering that both companies are considered competitors.

To this extent, Apple has already launched a number of video streaming apps on its Apple TV, and this includes HBO Go, Showtime, YouTube, Hulu, and Netflix among others; but this did not include Amazon’s Prime Video app – but a compatible app is now underway and will be launched soon.

Prime Video, the Amazon video streaming service that’s available as part of the company’s Prime offerings, could launch as part of tvOS “within a few weeks”, according to a representative.

Amazon Prime members can download the Amazon Video for iOS free of charge on the App Store. Right now, Prime subscribers have to use the Instant Video app on their iPhone or iPad, or use an alternate device such as Amazon’s own Fire Stick to view videos on their television.

Now that Amazon’s Prime Video is tvOS-bound, I have another reason to pick up one of Apple’s fourth-generation TV devices. Some wrongly criticized Apple in October for seemingly not allowing Prime Instant Video on the new Apple TV. Amazon further revealed it took the action because the competing products would confuse its customers as to what choice to make. However, that rumor was proven wrong when Apple told Buzzfeed that any app is welcome on tvOS and Amazon just hadn’t submitted anything. This service is also available on Android, Amazon Fire TV, Fire OS, PS3, PS4, Wii, Wii U, Roku, Xbox 360, Xbox One, the web, and selected TV and Blu-ray players from LG, Samsung, Sony, Panasonic, and Vizio. There is an AirPlay option on the Prime Video app for iOS that streams from an iPhone or iPad onto the TV. As soon as we get some more details on when the Amazon Video app is coming to the new Apple TV, we will let you guys know.
